sanctuary history: In 1996, the European Union awarded a $600,000 grant to Janis Carter to establish a chimpanzee protection project in Guinea. One aspect of that project included the creation of a chimpanzee rehabilitation center the Parc National du Haut Niger, which was opened in 1997 and took in chimpanzees from two smaller sanctuaries in addition to those confiscated from private homes. Two years later, Estelle Raballand was asked to take over management of the sanctuary, and the CCC has quickly grown to care for over 40 chimpanzees. In addition, the CCC has embarked upon successful conservation and anti-poaching programs through a poster and sticker campaign, and is examining possible reintroduction sites for the release of some chimpanzees back into the wild.
