sanctuary history: CERCOPAN was founded in 1995 by Canadian Zena Tooze, with a name derived from the two genera of forest monkeys Cercopithecus and Cercocebus, and pan (meaning “all” in Greek), 11 rescued primates, one local staff, one volunteer and an annual budget of approximately USD $4,000. Originally a sanctuary for confiscated primates, which addressed a real need as the newly promulgated National Park carried out confiscations, CERCOPAN today is very much more than a sanctuary. A staff of over 30 – including 28 Nigerians and 4 international volunteers – and an annual budget over USD $100,000 allow CERCOPAN to go beyond the care and rehabilitation of more than 100 primates. CERCOPAN, which has a thriving environmental education program in 4 local government areas and 34 schools in Cross River State, has also prioritized working with communities towards forest protection, land management and protection of endangered species, and research in its programming.
