sanctuary history: The Drill Rehabilitation & Breeding Center was formed by Americans Liza Gadsby and Peter Jenkins in 1991 to try and rescue one of the world’s most endangered primates. Drills were thought to be extinct in Nigeria until surveys in the 1980s confirmed the existence of a few small communities, prompting Gadsby and Jenkins to initiate a conservation and breeding program in the mountainous Afi River Forest Reserve, the first in-situ program of its kind. Starting with only five orphaned drills, the centre has gone on to maintain a population of over 100 drills, in addition to confiscated chimpanzees and other primates.
