sanctuary history: The Vervet Monkey Foundation was created in 1989 when three South Africans - Arthur Hunt and Dave and Alma Du Toit were given an orphaned baby monkey by a concerned farm employee. Although Vervet monkeys are regarded as "vermin" by many South Africans, the foundation dedicated itself to both rescuing the species and changing public attitudes towards the animals. After a prolonged bureaucratic battle, the Vervet Monkey Foundaiton opened its sanctuary in 1997, and today cares for hundreds of monkeys, with the ultimate goal of returning as many as possible to the wild.
