sanctuary history: The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) – Chimpanzee Eden was created as part of the Umhloti game reserve in northeastern South Africa. The first and only chimpanzee sanctuary in South Africa, JG-Chimpanzee Eden is committed to rescue and rehabilitation of chimpanzees across Africa, particularly those in areas where PASA sanctuaries do not currently exist. As a result, JG-Chimpanzee Eden’s population of orphaned chimpanzees – most of whom are direct results of the bushmeat trade and deforestation -- come from Angola, Mozambique, and Sudan. Entering the reserve, a mere 15 km from the bustling city of Nelspruit, visitors can expect to be captivated by the beautiful bush surroundings with most of the natural game species roaming the reserve. The reserve is located in a low risk malaria area.
